Father Tom Allender, SJ

Father Tom Allender passed away in January of 2025. He leaves behind an extensive legacy and ministry.

Father Tom Allender, nationally known author and preacher, has given well over 2,000 Parish Missions under the general theme of “Life’s Journey”. Each day’s talk was given twice. Over the past 30+ years, Father Tom developed a witty and energetic speaking style and a spirituality that he helped us recognize, convincingly, that God loves us unconditionally.

Ordained a Jesuit priest in 1971, Father Tom held degrees in theology and philosophy, taught at both the high school and college level and performed as innovative school administrator. With his illuminating practical spirituality, he was at ease as a marriage counselor, advisor to teenagers and retreat director for drug and alcohol dependents. He along with his associate Donald Fisher wrote the book, God Loves an Unmade Bed which is a down-to-earth meeting with a god that loves us unconditionally, precisely in our troubles.

The Parish Mission, “Life’s Journey”, has been developed over the past 30+ years. Father Tom has preached throughout the United States and Canada. During the Mission, Father Tom focused on how we develop a grounded, realistic and psychologically honest spirituality. Through prodding questions about personal priorities, relationships and fears, Father Tom pointed the way to a relationship with God that transforms current problems into forgiveness and growth. This relationship is the spirituality that alone can give heart to religion, the celebration of inner life.
